At Painted Plumeria, I am a small business owner (Angie Scarle). I root several of my own, and also import several exotic varieties. I have a true passion and love for these amazing plants, and I would love to share it with you.
ABOUT Plumerias:
These are tropical plants known for their intoxicating aroma, and unique flowers. Unlike many plants a plumeria seed (like our own offspring) will have some characteristics from the mother tree and some from the father. So a seed pod with 20 seeds could have 20 unique trees. This is why you see so many names (no I don't make them all up). Once 3 bloom cycles have been photographed, you can register and name it. Often in named varieties, you will note the first 2 initials of the cultivar (like JJ for Jungle Jack, SK for Supakit Kongudomsrap, and of course NUI for Leera NUI).
Some plumerias are grafted and some are rooted. The advantage to grafted plumerias is that you get much stronger roots in less time. Some varieties are fairly easy to root, and some are far more difficult. You may find a lot of conflicting information on best practices to propagate. Some people say to just stick them in the ground (I cringe but I know they probably have some that grow very easily and have plenty if a few don't survive). I'm going to try to make a video and post it to FB in the next year on "how to." I have not mastered grafting - I import from growers far more skilled than myself.
Cinnamon - it's made from the trunk of a tree, and it has antifungal/antibacterial properties very useful if you need to cut a branch or something.
WATER - especially when plumerias are new and the roots are still forming, be VERY CAREFUL about overwatering. The soil should be mostly dry before they are watered again. Despite their tropical lush appearance, the leaves often function like umbrellas preventing too much rain. Interestingly enough, I've noted that some of my plumerias have more/less tolerance for water than others. For example I have a variegated one that's over a year old, but I still have to keep it in a relatively small pot to prevent too much water on it, and occasionally take it under cover when it rains too much. A well draining soil mixture is critical for plumerias. I use a 50/50 perlite and potting soil mix. Raised flower beds are helpful for once they go in the ground.
SUN - they love the sun. Some states that get very intense sun, might want some limited shade (I have heard of them getting sunburned, but I have not personally seen it in South Florida).
These amazing trees I promise will become your next addiction, but please feel free to reach out with any questions. I love talking about plumerias, and I've spent my life in customer service, I love helping people any way that I can.
